NAIROBI, Kenya, May 31 — The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has commended Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir for taking swift and decisive action to improve building standards compliance following the collapse of an 11-storey building in Kilifi Corner.
In a statement released today, EBK hailed the Governor’s bold leadership in publishing the Task Force Report titled “Why The Building Collapsed – And What We’re Doing About It”, which was released on May 30, 2025.
“We thank HE Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir for his firm action and commitment to transparency. The report breaks down what went wrong and who was responsible, offering a blueprint for preventing future tragedies,” EBK stated.
Collaboration for Safer Construction
The commendation follows a February 2025 meeting between the EBK team—led by Chairman Eng. Erastus Mwongera and Registrar/CEO Eng. Margaret Ogai—and the Governor of Mombasa, during which the Board shared professional recommendations for enhancing building safety across the county.
Governor Nassir praised EBK at the time for its objective findings, which have since informed action steps, including the release of the task force’s investigative report.
Key EBK compliance recommendations to counties are building designs and drawings that must be reviewed only by licensed, accredited engineers, gazetted annually by EBK, among othera.
A Call for Nationwide Action
EBK reiterated its continued engagement with all County Governments to strengthen regulatory enforcement and promote safe, professionally managed construction.
“The safety of Kenya’s built environment depends on rigorous standards and professional accountability. We are committed to supporting every county taking bold steps to make construction safer for everyone,” the Board said.
The Kilifi Corner incident has spotlighted the need for urgent reforms in how building projects are approved, supervised, and executed—a call that EBK says it will continue to lead, through technical collaboration, policy guidance, and public accountability.
