Celine Dion and Chance the Rapper distance themselves from R. Kelly, pull songs from sites.
The ‘Mute R. Kelly’ campaign appears to be gathering momentum after the ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ docu-series was aired. Renowned music stars including Celine Dion and Chance the Rapper have pulled their collaborations with the accused American singer from streaming services.
Kelly is currently under investigation by the authorities in connection with a string of sexual abuse allegations made in the docu-series. The 6-part series features victims, some of whom were his mentees and background singers as well as ex-wife Andrea Kelly rally against him with a slew of allegations dating as far back as the 1990s. R.Kelly has however threatened to sue everyone in the blood-curdling documentary for spreading lies about him.
The French-Canadian diva’s 1998 duet, “I’m Your Angel”, which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop collaboration, has been removed from streaming sites same as Chance’s 2015 track, “Somewhere in Paradise”.
Chance, who participated in the controversial documentary later apologized for having worked with the 52-year-old, saying “making a song with R. Kelly was a mistake.”
The artists join Lady Gaga in pulling collaborations with the accused singer, after she removed her 2013 track, “Do What U Want” last week.
R.Kelly is a Grammy Award-winning RnB singer who has been accused of abusing underage girls sexually, physically and emotionally for the past 20 years. Lifetime’s docu-series shed light on the “Ignition” hitmaker’s history of sexual misconducts early this month but R.Kelly has denied all the allegations.
