NAIROBI, Kenya, July 27 – Britam Connect has unveiled a new medical insurance cover targeting domestic and informal workers, with premiums starting at Sh336 per month to expand access to affordable healthcare.

The product, dubbed Bima ya Wafanyikazi, is underwritten by Britam and distributed through Minet Kenya Insurance Brokers.

It provides inpatient, outpatient, maternity, dental, optical and last expense benefits, and is available to individual workers, employers and registered worker associations.

The insurer says the product addresses a major gap in the market, with the International Labour Organization estimating that more than 90 percent of domestic workers in Kenya have no medical insurance.

Many also work under informal arrangements without written contracts or financial protection, making them vulnerable to medical emergencies.

Britam Connect Chief Executive Officer Evah Kimani said the cover is designed to reduce the financial burden caused by illness.

“An illness or injury can quickly place pressure on household finances. Bima ya Wafanyikazi brings together outpatient and inpatient care, maternity, dental and optical benefits, allowing workers to seek treatment early and reduce financial shocks,” she said.
