AI adoption in PR takes center stage as Africa Global PR Week opens in Nairobi

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 27 – The Africa Global Public Relations Week (AGPRW) 2025 has officially opened in Nairobi with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and its role in shaping the future of communications across the continent.

Themed “Beyond Conversations: Redefining PR, Redefining Africa,” the week-long event has brought together PR professionals, communications experts, academics, and thought leaders from more than 25 countries. The discussions are centered on how AI and digital tools are transforming public relations, from digital storytelling to audience engagement and crisis management.

Mary Njoki, Founder and CEO of Glass House PR Limited, said the continent’s growing digital landscape makes it critical for communicators to embrace AI. “Africa’s PR industry is at a pivotal moment. With over 384 million social media users, a young tech-savvy population, and increasing internet penetration, we are uniquely positioned to integrate AI into our strategies,” she said.

Njoki added that while AI remains a major talking point, mobile phones remain the most accessible communication tool for reaching African audiences. “When we think of technology, we often think of AI, but we must also recognize the power of mobile phones, which are in every home across Africa,” she said.

Other speakers highlighted the importance of contextualizing AI for African realities. Bianca de Beer, Senior Marketing Manager at First for Women Insurance in South Africa, noted that AI can be harnessed to reflect African values. Nyandia Gachago, Founder of Mintylime, stressed that although more than 20 AI tools exist in Kenya, access remains limited.

The event also features an AI and PR Masterclass, showcasing real-world applications of artificial intelligence in campaign planning, content creation, and crisis management. Key themes being explored include AI’s role in digital storytelling for African audiences, and real-time data-driven crisis communication, among others.

Notable keynote speakers include Dr. Yetty Ogunnubi, CEO of YD Company (Nigeria), Israel Opayemi, Managing Director of Chain Reactions Africa, and Paul Holmes, Founder & CEO of PRovoke Media.

The program also features a Youth and Innovation Hub, giving young professionals and students opportunities to connect with mentors, showcase creativity, and explore careers in PR.

With its focus on technology and collaboration, AGPRW 2025 is expected to catalyze new partnerships, strengthen the industry, and position Africa more prominently in the global communications landscape.
