NAIROBI, Kenya, June 17 – Afya Gemma, a clinical decision support platform developed by Aga Khan University’s Data Innovation Office, has been selected for the 2025 Google.org Accelerator. The recognition positions the platform to scale its AI-powered medical support tools across Kenya’s healthcare system.
Designed to help clinicians make informed decisions, Afya Gemma uses generative AI to deliver localized, evidence-based guidance via natural language queries. It draws from anonymized national Electronic Health Record (EHR) data, Kenya-specific clinical protocols, and peer-reviewed research.
The tool aims to ease pressure on Kenya’s strained healthcare workforce—just over 10,000 doctors serve a population exceeding 52 million—by extending clinical expertise to under-resourced and rural areas.
Initially, Afya Gemma will be implemented in 40 Aga Khan health facilities. The Google.org support is expected to help refine the tool’s algorithms, improve language localization, and broaden its reach.
Under the accelerator, selected projects receive part of a $30 million funding pool, alongside access to Google Cloud credits, technical support, and mentorship over six months.
The backing from Google.org is a notable boost for Aga Khan University’s efforts to localize AI tools for healthcare in low-resource settings and signals growing confidence in technology-driven solutions to address systemic gaps in clinical care.
