Young Learners Introduced to Space Exploration in Pre-Day of the African Child Event

NAIROBI, Kenya June 15 – Pupils at Mcedo Beijing Primary School in Nairobi participated in a space-themed learning programme on Monday as part of activities marking the Day of the African Child, celebrated annually on June 16.

The event, facilitated by CGTN Kiswahili content creator Yang Yuting, exposed learners to concepts of space exploration through a documentary screening on China’s astronaut programme and related scientific achievements.

The film introduced pupils to the experiences of Chinese astronauts and the technology behind space missions, providing a practical lesson on science, innovation and careers in the space sector.

Following the screening, learners took part in drawing and painting activities inspired by the themes explored in the documentary. Many of the artworks focused on space travel, future careers and international friendship.

Teachers who attended the event said such activities help complement classroom learning by exposing pupils to subjects that are not commonly explored in depth at the primary school level.

The programme also featured the presentation of awards and gifts to learners who participated in the creative sessions.

Organizers said the initiative sought to encourage children’s interest in science and technology while providing an opportunity for cultural exchange between African and Chinese communities.

The event was held ahead of the Day of the African Child, which is observed across the continent to highlight the importance of children’s rights, access to education and overall well-being.

As countries increasingly invest in science, technology and innovation, education stakeholders have continued to emphasize the need to expose learners to emerging fields from an early age in order to prepare them for future opportunities.

The Nairobi event brought together these themes, using space exploration as a platform to engage young learners and encourage them to think beyond traditional career paths.
