NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 30 – The Senate Standing Committee on Lands and Natural Resources embarked on a fact-finding visit to Isulu-Bushiangala, Kakamega County, following a petition concerning the proposed underground mining project by Shanta Gold Kenya Limited.
The visit is part of the Committee’s constitutional oversight and public participation mandate aimed at establishing the facts surrounding the proposed mining project and addressing concerns raised by residents and stakeholders.
The petition alleges issues relating to the licensing process, environmental compliance, public participation, land rights, resettlement, compensation, and the potential social, economic and cultural impacts of the project on the affected communities.
During the visit, Members of the Committee engaged local residents, community leaders, county officials, and representatives of relevant institutions to gather firsthand information and hear the views of all stakeholders.
The Committee also assessed the proposed project site and the concerns surrounding land ownership, environmental safeguards, and the protection of livelihoods.
Speaking during the exercise, Committee Chairperson Mohamed Faki (Mombasa) reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to ensuring that all development projects are undertaken in accordance with the Constitution and the law, while safeguarding the rights and interests of affected communities.
The findings from the fact-finding mission will inform the Committee’s report and recommendations to the Senate as it considers the petition and determines the appropriate course of action in the public interest.
