NAIROBI, Kenya, May 15 – Matatu operators have announced a 50 percent increase in fares following the latest fuel price hike announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
In a statement, a group representing boda boda riders, matatu operators and tour operators also announced plans for a nationwide strike on Monday to protest the rising fuel costs.
Albert Karakacha, President of the Matatu Owners Association, warned that no public transport operators would operate during the strike, adding that major roads would be blocked.
The announcement came a day after EPRA increased the price of Super Petrol by Sh16.65 per litre and Diesel by Sh46.29 per litre in its latest monthly review. Kerosene prices remained unchanged.
Consequently, a litre of petrol in Nairobi now retails at Sh214.25, while diesel costs Sh242.92.
