Lawyer Alex Kamau installed as Rotary Club of Nanyuki President

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 11 – Lawyer and community leader Alex Mwangi Kamau has been installed as President of the Rotary Club of Nanyuki, assuming leadership of one of Laikipia County’s most active service organizations at a time when Rotary clubs across the world are seeking to deepen their impact and expand their reach.

Kamau, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and Managing Partner at AK Advocates, officially took office during a colourful ceremony held in Nanyuki town, Laikipia’s tourism capital. The new president steps into the role with a track record in law, governance, education and public service.

During his address, members following his installation, his message extended beyond the club itself. Referencing recent tensions witnessed across the country, the incoming Rotary leader emphasized the importance of dialogue, peaceful engagement, and social cohesion.

To those who protest: may your voices be strong, but your methods peaceful. To those in government: may your ears be open, and your engagement constructive,” Kamau appealed, urging Kenyans to embrace peaceful engagement and mutual understanding. The comments underscored Rotary’s global commitment to peacebuilding and conflict prevention. Through community initiatives and international partnerships, the organization seeks to tackle underlying challenges such as poverty, inequality and lack of educational opportunities, which often contribute to social instability.

Kamau also spoke about the responsibility that comes with leadership, drawing inspiration from lessons shared during the recent Rotary District Conference and Awards in Naivasha.

“Leadership is not ownership. Leadership is stewardship,” he stressed, adding that the true measure of leadership is the impact left behind rather than the position itself. The incoming president pledged to align the club’s work with Rotary International’s theme, ‘Create Lasting Impact’, while introducing a local theme, ‘One Rotary, One Direction’, aimed at strengthening collaboration among members, friends of Rotary, partners and communities.

He challenged Rotarians to think collectively about the future of service in Laikipia and beyond. “Impact is only possible when we move together,as a club, with other clubs, with the district, with partners, and with every stakeholder who shares our vision for a better world,” Kamau observed

The ceremony also marked the conclusion of Rebecca Ngatia’s term as president. During her address, she reflected on a year that saw the club undertake education initiatives, environmental conservation projects, international partnerships and fundraising efforts that supported scholarships and community development.

Ngatia credited the club’s achievements to teamwork and member commitment.

“I did not do all these things by myself; I had an amazing team,” she said while recognizing members of her board and volunteers who helped deliver key projects throughout the year.

As she handed over leadership, Ngatia praised Kamau’s ability to unite people around a common goal and encouraged members to support him in the coming Rotary year.

The transition comes as the Rotary Club of Nanyuki continues to expand its footprint in education scholarships, school infrastructure development, youth empowerment and community service, areas that Kamau says will remain central to the club’s mission.
