NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 28 — Kenya and the Czech Republic have taken a major step toward deepening their bilateral defence relations with the signing of a Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
The agreement was signed Wednesday by Cabinet Secretary for Defence Soipan Tuya and the Czech Republic’s Ambassador to Kenya, Nicol Adamcová.
The DCA establishes a structured framework to guide enhanced cooperation between the two countries’ defence establishments.
Under the agreement, Kenya and the Czech Republic will collaborate in key areas including military education and training, peacekeeping and peace support operations, intelligence and information sharing, maritime security, cybersecurity, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
The framework is designed to promote interoperability, professional capacity building, and the exchange of best practices, while strengthening institutional linkages between the two defence forces.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, CS Tuya commended the Czech Republic for its sustained support to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), particularly in the training and capacity development of KDF Special Forces.
She said the cooperation has had a positive impact on Kenya’s internal security and contributed to regional stability.
“I am pleased to announce the signing of a Defence Cooperation Agreement between Kenya and the Czech Republic,” said CS Tuya.
“Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1993, Kenya and the Czech Republic have maintained constructive and cordial relations, with defence cooperation increasingly becoming a central pillar of our engagement in capacity-building and training.”
Structured framework
She noted that the signing marks the culmination of discussions that began in 2019, establishing a formal and structured framework to guide and strengthen collaboration between Nairobi and Prague.
Ambassador Adamcová reaffirmed the Czech Republic’s commitment to a strong and enduring partnership with Kenya.
She highlighted the shared values and mutual interests underpinning the defence relationship and emphasized the importance of sustained military-to-military engagement in advancing peace, security, and stability both regionally and globally.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Assistant Chief of the Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Plans, Doctrine and Training (OPD&T), Major General Fredrick Leuria.
Ambassador Adamcová was accompanied by Kenya’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Stella Mokaya, and the Czech Military and Air Attaché, Lieutenant Colonel Bonvoj Jurenka.
The signing of the DCA formalizes a framework for future cooperation in training, intelligence sharing, and joint operations aimed at promoting regional and international security.
