NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 5 – The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is taking a central role in delivering world-class sports infrastructure across the country, with the Kapsabet Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Nandi County emerging as a flagship example of their expertise and precision.
The groundbreaking for the 12-acre stadium, led by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, unveiled plans for a 400-meter mixed-surface track, a regulation football pitch, and a 10,000-seat capacity.
“This is a major step in ensuring that our talented athletes in Nandi County have the facilities they deserve to train and compete at international standards,” said CS Tuya, emphasising the government’s commitment to transforming sports across the country.
She added, “Under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces, this project will be delivered efficiently, on time, and to the highest standards, reflecting our broader mandate to modernise sports infrastructure nationwide.”
The initiative aims to harness Nandi County’s renowned athletic talent, providing local athletes with the facilities needed to train and compete at the highest level.
“Today, we have made a significant step in enhancing sports infrastructure in our county, owing to the groundbreaking for the construction of an ultra-modern Kipchoge Keino Stadium,” said Nandi Governor Hon. Stephen Sang, highlighting the transformative potential of the project for local athletes.
“For our athletes, this will be more than a stadium; it will be a complete high-performance environment,” Governor Sang added.
“Warm-up areas, an indoor gymnasium, strength and conditioning rooms, and an accommodation block for training camps mean our teams and athletes can train conveniently and comfortably within the same complex.”
In conclusion, Sang noted that the stadium is not just an investment in infrastructure, “it is an investment in our youth, our economy, and our identity as a county known for producing world-class athletes.”
Implemented by the Nandi County Government under the supervision of KDF within the Ministry of Defence, the project exemplifies the efficiency, discipline, and quality control that military oversight brings.
Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Muriru, during a recent inspection of Talanta Sports City, another flagship government project, emphasised that the Ministry is currently overseeing more than 21 stadium projects nationwide as part of President William Ruto’s broader mandate to modernise Kenya’s sports infrastructure.
“We are delivering these projects on time, to standard, and within budget. As instructed by our Commander-in-Chief, they will be done,” Dr. Muriru said.
Project architect Major Victor King’e, echoing the PS, added that the Talanta facility’s design and execution reflect the discipline and excellence expected of a Defence-led project.
“This model represents how the stadium will look upon completion. We plan to execute it to this standard, in line with military precision,” he said.
The stadium’s development mirrors the standards set by Talanta Sports City, which is already redefining national sports infrastructure through advanced technology, international-standard facilities, and integrated training environments.
While Talanta serves as a national hub for multisport excellence, the Kapsabet project brings similar standards closer to local talent in the counties, creating a seamless ecosystem for nurturing athletes from grassroots to elite levels.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Mitei, area MP Hon. Josses Lelmengit, Tinderet MP Hon. Julius Kibiwot Melly, and Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of Infrastructure at KDF, highlighting the strong collaboration between county and national leadership in delivering high-impact projects.
With KDF at the helm, Kenya is setting a new benchmark for county-level sports infrastructure, ensuring that facilities are not only modern and safe but also delivered with the discipline and precision that have become synonymous with Defence-led projects nationwide.
