NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 7 — Detectives in Kisii are holding a General Service Unit (GSU) police officer linked to a violent robbery reported on February 3.
Police from Kisii Central rescued Constable Edgar Opollo from a furious mob after finding the armed suspect under attack from the public.
The officers on patrol established that the suspect had robbed a smartphone from a Kisii University student, and recovered the phone in question after frisking the suspect.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Wednesday said detectives in the area were pursuing an armed gang of three suspects linked to a robbery at a local supermarket.
The gand reportedly stole Sh40,000 from PEPS Mini Supermarket situated at Corner Mbaya on January 2.
CCTV footage on the incident showed three partially masked robbers, two of whom wielded an AK47 and a pistol, storm the retail outlet.
“The rifle bearer had police fatigues on,” DCI noted adding it was not clear whether the person in question was a police officer.
The supermarket owner positively identified Opollo as one of the robbers at an identification parade.
DCI said the suspect was undergoing treatment for injuries sustained from the mob pending arraignment in court for robbery with violence.
