NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 4 – Christmas arrived early at Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Airport during the hotel’s annual cake-mixing ceremony — an event that carried added excitement this year following the recognition of Natasha Grace Mwangi as Best General Manager, Airport Hotels in Kenya by CEO Destinations 2025.
In a sector still dominated by male leadership, Mwangi stands out as one of the few female hotel general managers in Kenya — and possibly the only woman leading an airport property. At the heart of the fast-paced Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ecosystem, she has carved out an influential leadership role marked by consistency and performance.
At the ceremony, Mwangi described the cake-mixing ritual as a symbol of collective effort.
“The annual cake-mixing ceremony is the most beautiful metaphor for our success,” she said. “Just like those diverse ingredients, we come together with unique skills. My award reflects a well-mixed, cohesive team. When we all contribute our best ingredients, the whole house wins.”
Under her tenure, Four Points JKIA has secured Kenya’s Best Airport Hotel award for four consecutive years. In 2025, the hotel added Kenya’s and Africa’s Leading Airport Hotel from the World Travel Awards and Best Airport Hotel from the International Property Awards.
Asked what it takes to maintain such a streak, Mwangi highlighted discipline and consistency.
“It takes an enormous amount of resilience and heart. Small habits done consistently lead to big wins,” she said.
Airport hotels operate in a relentless environment: night arrivals, early-morning departures, crews checking in at odd hours, and guests flowing through different time zones. Four Points has positioned itself as a reliable haven within that rhythm — a result Mwangi partly attributes to human-centered leadership.
She speaks to at least 100 people daily, whether guests or staff.
“Every morning, I make it a point to greet at least one hundred people. It sets the tone,” she explained.
Her career began at a front desk in the UK, balancing part-time shifts with studies in Criminal Justice. Since returning to Kenya in 2012, she has worked across several departments. At Four Points, she rose from Front Office Manager in 2017 to General Manager, saying her growth came from choosing to be “where the action is.”
The hotel’s identity strongly reflects Kenyan culture. The Tazama Rooftop displays local art and graffiti that mirrors Nairobi’s character, while pan-African cuisine, Aeropils craft beer, and Kenyan coffee give travellers a sense of place.
During a fireside chat, Mwangi spoke openly about occupying a rare space as a woman in top hospitality management.
“There is increased scrutiny, yes, but there is even greater privilege in visibility,” she said. “I didn’t have female mentors lighting the way, but I hope my journey creates a clearer path for someone coming after me.”
Her advice to young women in hospitality was straightforward:
“Bet on yourself, fiercely. Many rooms you walk into won’t look like you, but your perspective is your power.”
The ceremony also marked the hotel’s eighth anniversary — a milestone Mwangi described with pride.
“Leading this hotel for a significant part of its life feels like watching a child grow up,” she reflected. “This anniversary, alongside the award, is a reminder that perseverance pays off.”
Mwangi credits much of the hotel’s progress to a young, dynamic team supported through deliberate coaching and consistent recognition.
“Feedback all the time — private coaching when needed and immediate, public recognition when earned. Praise is the most powerful currency we have,” she said.
In a world defined by constant movement, Mwangi has turned Four Points into a steady, welcoming anchor. Travellers passing through JKIA will likely find her on the floor — greeting staff, checking on guests, and keeping the hotel’s heartbeat steady.
