NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 5 – A liter of milk sold by farmers in Kenya rose by 5.7 percent to Sh49.9 last year, data from the State Department for Livestock Development shows.
In 2022, farmers, on average, were getting Sh47.2 on the same volume.
An increase in price came at a time when per capita milk consumption rose from 78.3 to 86.1 liters.
The rise was a boost to farmers when the cost of farm inputs such as dairy meal, among others, rose significantly last year.
This comes at a time when milk processors are increasing farmgate prices to cushion producers from high operating costs.
Last year, for example, New KCC hiked a liter of milk purchased from farmers from Sh45 to Sh50.
Speaking in Kobujoi Market in Aldai Constituency, Nandi County, last week, President William Ruto implored New KCC to increase a liter of milk purchased from farmers to Sh53.
Data from the Kenya Dairy Board shows that milk consumption in 2023 rose to 755.34 million liters, representing a 7.33 percent jump.
