NAIROBI, Kenya, July 21 – The revival of the historic Kamariny Stadium is moving forward at an accelerated pace, transitioning into a round-the-clock operation to deliver a world-class sporting facility to Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The project officially commenced in September last year. While initially envisioned as a one-year contract, the timeline faced setbacks due to design modifications and unpredictable weather conditions.
However, contractors report that these initial hurdles have been resolved, and construction has entered its peak phase.
According to Dishon Odingo, the Lead Surveyor for the construction, the site has been transformed into a 24-hour operation to regain lost time and meet completion targets.
“Right now, things are moving well,” Odingo stated. “We have instituted day and night shifts, working 24 hours a day to ensure the project is completed. The momentum on-site is strong.”
The massive infrastructure project has also provided a significant economic boost to the local community, currently employing over 120 workers. The workforce is a strategic blend of highly skilled external experts and a large contingent of local labourers.
Odingo says more than 100 of the active workers on-site have been recruited directly from the local community.He further highlighted the unique approach to labour, noting that local workers who demonstrate exceptional skill and expertise during this project will be retained for future company contracts nationwide.
Director General of Sports Kenya Timothy Kilimo says investments in sports infrastructure are designed to unlock both sporting excellence and economic opportunities.
“Sport is an economy. Infrastructure is its foundation. Every modern stadium creates opportunities for talent to thrive, jobs to grow and communities to earn from talent.”
Kilimo noted that while Kenya has no shortage of sporting talent, sustained investment in quality infrastructure is essential to maximise its potential.
“Talent alone is not enough. We must invest in talent for the highest return on investment as a country.”
Kamariny Stadium holds a sacred place in global athletics history.
Situated in Iten, globally recognised as the “Home of Champions”, the track has trained generations of world-record holders, marathon legends, and international athletes. The historic grounds even trace their origins back to a launch by Queen Elizabeth II during the colonial era.
For years, the local athletic community has urged the government to expedite the completion of the stadium, which has faced multiple delays under previous contractors. The sight of structural progress and active night shifts has brought renewed hope to the region.
“The community is very happy about this stadium,” Odingo added. “When they see it rising again, they are overjoyed. This is where champions are built, and they appreciate the government’s renewed commitment to delivering this facility.”
Once complete, the stadium is expected to feature a modern running track, football pitch, and upgraded stands, cementing Iten’s status as the premier high-altitude training hub in the world.
