NAIROBI, Kenya, June 19, 2026 – National 10,000m champion Loice Chemnung put on a performance for the ages to successfully defend her title at the Nyayo Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Chemnung clocked 31:46.90 to win the 25-lap race, finishing first ahead of African champion Diana Wanza who timed 31:56.80 in second place.
Commonwealth Games 5000m bronze medalist Selah Busienei came third in 32:01.85.
Speaking after the win, Chemnung said the win fits in with her larger scheme to make the podium at this year’s Chicago Marathon.
“Until now, I have not made up my mind on whether I will compete at the Commonwealth Games. That is something I need to discuss with my coach. Training for the marathon and the 10,000m is very different. My goal is to compete at the Chicago Marathon once again,” she said.
All the same, the 2015 African Games 10,000m bronze medalist was elated with her successful title defence.
“I had not prepared well for today’s competition because I only just came back from Chicago a month ago. I feel that this is my year because coming from that (Chicago) to defend my title is not an easy feat,” she said.
The national championships are doubling up as trials for the Commonwealth Games, which is set for July 23-August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.
