NAIROBI, Kenya June 19 – Former Chief Justice David Maraga and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i have intensified efforts to forge a united opposition front against President William Ruto, holding fresh consultations aimed at building a broad coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement issued on Friday, Maraga revealed that he had held talks with Matiang’i as part of ongoing engagements with other opposition leaders seeking to consolidate forces and present a common political alternative to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“This morning, myself and Dr. Fred Matiang’i held talks as part of ongoing consultations with other opposition leaders to enhance opposition unity with the hope of building a broad coalition committed to transforming Kenya,” Maraga said.

The former Chief Justice said the discussions were anchored on a shared commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law and the fight against corruption, adding that the ultimate objective was to establish a government that upholds democratic values and accountability.
“The overarching goal remains forming a government based on constitutionalism and rule of law, and the total eradication of state capture and corruption,” he stated.
The meeting comes amid growing momentum within opposition ranks to unite behind a common agenda and potentially a single presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027. Maraga has in recent days publicly backed efforts to bring together opposition leaders under a values-based coalition, arguing that Kenya requires a complete reset of governance and leadership.
Recent opposition consultations have brought together leaders from different political formations, with discussions focusing on governance reforms, economic recovery and strengthening institutions. Political observers view the Maraga-Matiang’i engagement as a significant step in efforts to consolidate opposition forces following months of fragmented political activity.
Matiang’i, who has emerged as one of the key figures in the opposition’s 2027 calculations, has also signaled support for broader unity talks, with leaders increasingly emphasizing the need for a single, formidable coalition capable of mounting a serious challenge to the ruling alliance.
The latest consultations are expected to continue in the coming weeks as opposition leaders seek common ground on leadership, policy priorities and coalition structures ahead of what is shaping up to be a highly contested 2027 presidential race.
