NAIROBI, Kenya, July 21 – 42 counties have received Sh6.97 billion from the National Treasury to invest in climate projects.

The second tranche of the County Climate Resilience Investment (CCRI) grants under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program is supported by the Government of Kenya, the World Bank, and the Governments of Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

The funding allows devolved units to operationalise their County Climate Change Action Plans (CCCAPs) and invest in priority climate resilience initiatives that address local climate risks, including droughts and floods.

“By channelling resources directly to the local level, we are strengthening institutional capacity, accelerating adaptation efforts, and ensuring that climate action delivers tangible benefits to communities most at risk,” John Mbadi, the National Treasury & Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary, said.

However, the CCRI Grants are performance-based and results-driven, requiring counties to meet certain requirements and standards to get the funds.

So far, FLLoCA has reached 1,137 wards (78.4 percent) of its 1,450-ward target.

“The Annual Performance Assessment process has been instrumental in ensuring that CCRI Grant allocations are grounded in accountability, readiness, and local ownership,” the National Treasury PS Chris Kiptoo said.

“Building on the foundation laid by the Participatory Climate Risk Assessment, this approach empowers counties to lead climate action through inclusive planning that reflects the unique needs and voices of their communities.”
