Feb 27 – US airman Aaron Bushnell, aged 25 has died after setting himself ablaze in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington DC on Sunday.
The incident, marked by distressing scenes, unfolded as Bushnell, in a harrowing act of protest, ignited himself while shouting “free Palestine.”
Emergency services rushed to the scene, where Secret Service officers swiftly intervened to extinguish the flames engulfing Bushnell’s body. Despite their efforts, Bushnell succumbed to his injuries, casting a shadow of sorrow over the embassy premises.
The Pentagon labelled the incident, occurring at 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT), as a “tragic event,” reflecting the profound impact of the airman’s drastic action.
In a heart-wrenching prelude to the act, Bushnell, donned in military attire, streamed a live video on Twitch, where he identified himself as an active member of the Air Force. Prior to the incident, he had reached out to several media outlets and left-wing platforms, forewarning of his intention to stage a protest against the perceived genocide of the Palestinian people.
Upon receiving the distressing news, Bushnell was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition. Authorities, upon discovering a suspicious vehicle in proximity to the incident site, promptly dispatched a bomb disposal unit. However, subsequent investigations revealed no hazardous materials, quelling fears of an imminent threat.
While details regarding Bushnell’s military service remain undisclosed, Stars and Stripes, a military newspaper, reported that he held the rank of senior airman. His Linkedin profile alluded to aspirations of transitioning into software engineering after graduating from Air Force basic training in November 2020.
The tragic incident reignites debates surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict, which erupted on 7 October last year following Hamas-led incursions into southern Israel. The ensuing military campaign, led by Israel, has claimed thousands of lives and displaced a significant portion of Gaza’s population.
In his defense of the offensive, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the gravity of the situation, suggesting that America would have responded similarly if subjected to comparable attacks.
