NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 15 – A matatu tout has been suspended after a video circulated online showing him pushing a woman into a roadside drainage ditch while the vehicle was in motion.
In a statement on its X platform, the National Transport and Safety Authority said it had also suspended the licence of the matatu driver involved after failing a re-test.
“Both the driver and the conductor have been disengaged by the SACCO. The driver’s driving licence has also been suspended after he failed a re-test,” NTSA said.
The action followed widespread public outrage on social media, with users demanding justice for the woman captured in the video.
NTSA noted that cases of road indiscipline involving matatu operators have been rising, prompting authorities to issue warnings and intensify crackdowns on rogue public service vehicles and SACCOs to restore order and improve road safety.
The authority urged the public to report reckless driving incidents by sharing details such as the vehicle registration number, location, and the date and time of the incident.
