NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 17 – President William Ruto has unveiled plans that could place Kenya at the center of Africa’s artificial intelligence revolution following talks with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in France.

The discussions focused on expanding collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), digital skills development, and positioning Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa.

If successful, the initiative could open new opportunities for thousands of young Kenyans seeking careers in technology and innovation.

“On the margins of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, I held discussions with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman on opportunities to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence and digital transformation,” President Ruto said.

According to the President, the talks explored ways of expanding AI education, strengthening digital skills, supporting educators and learners, and reinforcing Kenya’s growing reputation as a hub for technology and innovation.

“We explored potential collaboration through establishing Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa,” Ruto stated.

The President said the proposed partnership aligns with Kenya’s ambition to become a leading digital economy in Africa while creating jobs and opportunities for young people.

“I underscored the importance of harnessing emerging technologies to create opportunities for young people, drive innovation and ensure Africa plays a meaningful role in shaping the future digital economy,” he added.

The latest discussions come as Kenya continues to attract global technology companies seeking to invest in Africa’s rapidly growing digital ecosystem.
