NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 25 – Mozilla, through its Kenya’s festival, played host to African tech communities, researchers, and human rights activists, where digital sovereignty, labor rights, and inclusion were discussed.
Attendees discussed the importance of digital extractivism and the introduction of global content moderation unions.
Other key considerations are fair and equitable wages and strong digital labor movements.
Policymakers, technologists, and activists shared how emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) have marginalized vulnerable groups on the continent and how data practices have continued to broaden the gap.
‘’Digital extractivisim is core to how many emerging technologies are being built,’’ said Chenai, who is the senior program officer at Africa Innovation Mradi.
Daniel Motaung, a former Facebook content moderator, said that people are key to driving solutions about labor rights.
‘’If all digital workers unite, we have the power to twist the hand of big tech companies to change,” he added.
Mozilla’s broader Africa innovation mission supports movements across east Africa and southern Africa to explore the intersection of technology and society, among others.
