NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 15 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has approved 15 vendors to provide electronic cargo monitoring and tracking services as it moves to a user-owned system.
KRA said its electronic seals used under the Regional Electronic Cargo Tracking System (RECTS) will be phased out by October 26, 2026.
“Subsequently, the electronic seals presently owned by KRA under RECTS will be gradually phased out up to 26th October, 2026,” KRA said in a public notice issued by the Commissioner for Customs and Border Control.
Under the new system, importers, exporters, clearing and forwarding agents, transporters, bonded warehouse operators and other users will choose from the 15 approved vendors.
KRA said the change follows increased demand for RECTS services and is intended to support port decongestion.
Once the KRA-owned seals are phased out, goods under customs control will be monitored exclusively using electronic devices supplied by the approved vendors.
Users will enter into commercial agreements directly with their preferred vendors.
The Regional Electronic Cargo Tracking System is used to monitor goods under customs control, particularly cargo in transit.
KRA has asked stakeholders involved in the movement and handling of goods under customs control to prepare for the October 26 transition.
