NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 13 – Police have arrested Kenya African National Union (KANU) Secretary General George Wainaina in connection with the ongoing investigations into the killing of city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.
Wainaina was picked up by detectives on Thursday from his Karen residence, according to his lawyer.
Wainaina’s lawyer insisted that his client has not been formally charged and remains only a “person of interest” in the homicide probe.
“My client George Wainaina was arrested Thursday from his Karen home. We have not been informed exactly what charges he is facing,” his lawyer told reporters.
“There are issues circulating in the media, but those are an oversay. There is no truth to that.”
The lawyer acknowledged that police seized an undisclosed amount of money from Wainaina’s home but dismissed any connection to the murder.
“So far, I have not had any law that prohibits anyone from carrying money as long as it is legitimate. The police have their processes of verifying whether monies are legitimate or not, and they will undertake those processes. It is not related to any homicide issue,” he said, adding that once verification is complete, the funds should be released.
He emphasized that investigators had not linked Wainaina directly to Mbobu’s killing and that his client was cooperating fully with authorities.
“As far as we are concerned, he is just a person of interest. We have been told it is a homicide investigation, but we don’t know which homicide specifically. We are waiting for details to be availed,” the lawyer noted.
The arrest comes days after the brazen killing of lawyer Mbobu, who was gunned down on September 9 along Lang’ata Road.
Police said Mbobu was driving home around 6:30 pm when a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, sparking panic and a traffic snarl-up on the busy road. Preliminary findings suggest the shooting was a targeted attack.
Mbobu, a seasoned advocate of the High Court of Kenya, was involved in several high-profile cases.
His killing has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity.
Detectives are pursuing multiple leads, including possible professional rivalries or personal disputes.
Several spent cartridges were recovered from the scene, and the lawyer’s vehicle was towed to Lang’ata Police Station for forensic analysis.
