NAIROBI, Kenya, April 11 – Nipsea Paint Kenya Limited, a subsidiary of Japanese paint maker Nippon Paint, plans to expand local production with an extended facility in Mombasa County.
The proposed project is contained in an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Study Report submitted to the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).
In the construction plan, godown one will handle equipment for paint raw materials such as resins, solvents, fillers, pigments, and additives, while the second one will house manufacturing units.
“Godown 3 will have Quality Control testing laboratory and/or equipment and also provide storage space for finished product,” the submitted ESIA reads in part.
“Each godown is designed to have an operational office at the mezzanine level complete with the sanitary facilities, the kitchen and the changing rooms.”
Only last year did Nippon Paint expand into Kenya with an eye on the East African market.
The firm, which makes industrial coatings and wood coatings as well as paint products for automobiles, entered the country with a distribution model through Nairobi.
In recent years, Kenya has attracted a number of international companies looking to expand production locally and expand regionally, highlighting its growing prominence on the continent.
In 2022, for example, AkzoNobel, a Japanese paint firm, also entered into a deal to acquire Kansai Plascon’s business in Uganda, Kenya, and other East African countries.
The entries of these firms into the country are expected to increase competition for existing firms such as Crown Paints, Basco Paints, and Solai Paints, among others, with improved options for buyers.
