NEW DELHI, India Aug 8— India recorded its highest-ever monthly electric vehicle sales in July 2026, with 327,901 units registered, representing a more than 66% increase from the same month last year.
Data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) shows that EVs accounted for nearly one in every eight vehicles retailed in the country during the month.
Electric vehicle adoption increased across all major categories, with electric two-wheelers surpassing 200,000 units for the first time. Their market share rose to 11.2% in July, up from 10.6% in June and 7.7% in July 2025.
Electric three-wheelers accounted for 65.1% of the segment, compared with 62.7% in June and 60.3% a year earlier.
Electric commercial vehicles also recorded growth, with their market share reaching 3.57%, up from 3.54% in June and 1.65% in July 2025.
Electric passenger vehicle registrations rose 83% year-on-year, giving them a 7.9% market share. The share was unchanged from June but higher than the 5.1% recorded in July 2025.
FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar said the July figures marked a significant shift in India’s vehicle market.
“India has never bought more electric vehicles in a month than it did in July’26 — 3,27,901 units, up over 66% YoY — with nearly one in eight vehicles retailed now electric,” he said.
Giridhar said the growth was evident across vehicle categories, with electric two-wheelers crossing the 200,000-unit threshold for the first time and electric three-wheelers increasingly becoming the preferred option in their segment.
He also said the rise in commercial EV adoption showed that fleet electrification was moving beyond pilot projects towards wider commercial deployment.
Passenger EV sales, he added, were being constrained partly by limited supplies of popular models, urging manufacturers to address shortages ahead of the festive season.
The latest figures come amid concerns that renewed disruptions linked to the West Asia crisis could push global oil prices higher and fuel inflation, potentially influencing more consumers towards electric vehicles.
Giridhar said the growing adoption indicated that India’s shift to electric mobility was becoming increasingly visible across the country.
