NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 7 — The National Assembly will convene special sittings on Thursday to consider the nominations of Renson Mulele and Andrew Musandi as Director of Public Prosecutions and Central Bank of Kenya Chairperson respectively.

Speaker Moses Wetangula said the sittings will commence at 10.00 am and at 2.30 pm respectively at the National Assembly Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, in Nairobi.

Wetangula indicated that he will also be conveying an urgent message from President William Ruto.

The MPs, who are currently on recess, will consider the adoption of a Report of the Departmental Committee on the Justice and the Legal Affairs on the vetting of Renson Mulele Ingonga as the nominee for the appointment as the Director of Public Prosecutions.

President William Ruto nominated Ingonga to replace Noordin Haji following his appointment as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Services (NIS).

In Musangi’s respect, the House will deliberate on the Report of the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning and the Senate Standing Committee on the Finance Budget on his suitability to chair the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Kenya.

President Ruto picked Musangi for the post after Mohammed Nyaoga completed his two terms at the helm of the Board in June.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Nyaoga in 2015 and renewed his term in 2019.

Sugar Bill

The MPs are going to debate about the cons and pros of the Sugar Bill, 2023 which seeks to provide for the development, regulation and promotion of the sugar industry through the re-establishment of the Kenya Sugar Board.

The Special Sitting will receive and vote on whether to adopt the joint report of the Departmental committee on Finance and National Planning and the Departmental Committee on Agriculture and livestock on the Memorandum by the National Treasury and Economic Planning on Action Plan to Revive and Commercialize State-owned sugar companies.

President Ruto, speaking in Bungoma in August, urged lawmakers to approve proposed waivers saying it is high time the factories to get back on track.

The President asked MPs to hasten the amendment to the law so as to allow the writing off of Sh117 billion debts accumulated by the millers.
