NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 25 – GA Insurance has today rolled out Kenya’s first comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) insurance coverage as the adoption of eco-friendly transportation solutions gains pace.
Uptake of EVs in the country has been rising lately, with sales of EVs increasing by 108 percent in the 2022–24 financial year.
The state is also eyeing five percent of registered EVs in the country by 2025.
Its launch offers reprieve to buyers whose vehicles were previously uncovered on Kenyan roads.
“GA Eco Drive Cover is a specialized insurance policy specifically targeted to cover unique risks faced by the E-Mobility segment and the business models around it,” GA Insurance Kenya Ltd. CEO Sandip Bhadury said.
“The traditional motor insurance policies cannot cater for the emerging risks and needs faced by this segment, as they were developed to cover motor vehicles propelled by internal combustion engines,” Bhadury added.
The policy will cover battery, charging cables, private charging stations, autonomous driving, injury, and damage caused by charging cables, among others.
GA says that the products underwent rigorous assessment before rollout by independent experts.
The product also aligns with the state’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 32 percent by 2030.
“This is in resonance with UNEP FI Principles for Sustainable Insurance and UN Sustainable Development Goals which will lead to further dialogue and conversation with the various key stakeholders.”
