Four Signs You Are In A Situationship

Not quite friends with benefits, not quite a committed relationship- welcome to the modern- day relationship purgatory term known as a “situationship”.

This buzzword defines a common dilemma: romantic relationships that aren’t official but are well, something. A situationship is a non-committal relationship that hasn’t been defined. Unlike ‘friends with benefits’ where the focus is solely on casual hookups, a situationship involves more connection and conversation- but often without clarity or direction. It’s the emotional maze of being romantically involved without knowing where this is going. If this sounds familiar you might be in a situationship.

If you’re scratching your head wondering if you’re in a situationship  here are telltale signs to help you figure out what is really going on:

Things don’t progress

In a healthy relationship, certain milestones occur naturally, you go out to dinners, you then meet friends and family, you celebrate anniversaries and share holidays. If these aren’t happening, it’s a red flag. In committed relationships, partners weave into each other’s lives- meeting colleagues or spending time with loved ones. If you’re not part of their world- it’s a sign that things aren’t heading towards something meaningful. Without shared connections, you might feel like a secret or an afterthought, especially if your partner doesn’t make an effort to introduce you to their inner circle or involve you in important events. Situationship often operates on a day-to-day basis, lacking long term planning.

The Connection is superficial

Situationships often lack the emotional intimacy and vulnerability required for deeper connections. Communication is inconsistent and typically surface level and dates are non-existent. Texting is the primary mode of communication in situationships. One day, your phone is buzzing with messages; the next, its radio silence. Plans are often spontaneous and lack consistency. Unlike committed relationship with scheduled dates and events, you end up seeing this person frequently for one week and then not at all for weeks after. The lack of regular meaningful interaction shows low investment in the relationship.

Haven’t had the define the relationship talk

One of the hallmark signs of a situationship is the absence of defined labels. Are you ‘just hanging out’ or ‘just seeing each other?’. The define the relationship conversation feels akward or avoided altogether, leaving you in a very ambiguous  space where you’re not quite sure what you mean to each other. If you’ve asked, ‘what are we?’ and have received an unclear answer, you’re likely in a situationship. Without exclusivity or any monogamy discussion, you’re left in a grey area where the relationship’s direction remains ambiguous.

You’re anxious or bored

When you don’t have regular dates, phone calls or text messages, that inconsistency can ultimately get to you and leave you feeling anxious. The lack of stability often creates a sense of anxiety about where you stand and what to expect next. Also when you’re just hanging out at casual hangouts- usually at home- can lead to boredom. Without the excitement of trying new activities, exploring shared interests, or engaging in meaningful conversation the relationship may feel stagnant and unfulfilling. Relationships thrive on novelty and shared experiences. In a situationship the absence of these elements can make the connection feel routine and devoid of excitement.

A situationship can work, especially if both people are looking for something casual and light. The key is having a mutual understanding and alignment. However when one party finds themselves feeling frustrated, bored or anxious, it’s often a clear sign that their emotional needs are not being met. Being in a situationship is inherently good or bad it depends on what you and your partner actually want out of this.
