NAIROBI,Kenya Aug 6 – Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has been unanimously elected Vice Chairperson of the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) following changes to the membership of Senate committees approved earlier this week.
Cherargei takes over from Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma, who was reassigned to the Senate County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee as part of a wider committee reconstitution endorsed by the Senate.
Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang retained his position as Chairperson of the influential oversight committee, which is mandated to examine reports of the Auditor-General on the financial statements of county governments and ensure accountability in the use of public funds.
Speaking after his election on Thursday, Cherargei pledged to work closely with members to strengthen oversight over devolved units.
“I want to assure members that we will work together to ensure we properly perform our role of checking county governments,” he said.
Kajwang congratulated his deputy, expressing confidence that the committee’s leadership would continue to enhance accountability at the county level.
“I am happy to have you back again as my vice chairperson. Let us work for the people,” Kajwang said.
The committee also welcomed Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo and Lamu Senator Joseph Githuku as new members following the reshuffle.
They replace Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Mwaruma, who were transferred to other committees under changes proposed by the Senate Business Committee and approved by the House in accordance with the Senate Standing Orders governing committee membership and reconstitution.
The latest reorganisation is part of a broader reshuffle of Senate committees that has seen several lawmakers moved across oversight and standing committees. Sifuna, who had previously been removed from the Senate Energy Committee in an earlier reconstitution, has now also exited the County Public Accounts Committee, with the latest changes bringing new faces into one of the Senate’s key watchdog committees.
