NAIROBI, Kenya, May 23 – The 7th ID4Africa 2023 Augmented General Meeting (AGM) has Kicked off in Nairobi with close to 2000 delegates from 90 countries in attendance including 50 African nations.
ID4Africa is a leading Pan-African Movement committed to fostering inclusive and responsible adoption of Identity for Development (ID4D).
The three-day event is developed and organized by ID4Africa and hosted by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Kenya.
Immigrations Principal secretary Julius Bitok says the gathering will focus on links between digital ID systems, access to government services, innovations and economic opportunities
The theme of this year’s AGM is “Digital Identity as Public Infrastructure.”
During the event, ID4Afica will also host an ID technology and solutions expo with over 100 exhibitors.
In a recent statement, Executive Chairman of ID4Africa Dr. Joseph Atick said the turnout highlights the significant global demand for digital identity.
“As our lives increasingly move online, authenticating ourselves digitally has become crucial for accessing essential services, participating in economic activities, and exercising our rights and liberties.” he said.
Atick noted that despite the fact that identification has become a pillar in economic and social development in recent years many Africans still lack legal or digital identity which he argues impedes their full participation in society noting the significance of the event.
Since its inception in 2014, the ID4Africa Movement has led the way in promoting responsible adoption of digital identity for the benefit of humanity.
By uniting governments, development partners, solution providers, and civil society organizations, ID4Africa is building consensus around inclusive, secure, and respectful digital identity that prioritizes the needs and rights of individuals.
The AGM will bring together numerous distinguished local and international leaders, including ministers and high-ranking government officials who will speak within the highly structured program, about their vision and experiences related to digital identity in Africa.
Most notable among them will be President William Ruto, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and Joseph Atick who will deliver the annual state of the ID4D Movement address.
Furthermore, Julius Bitok, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Citizen Services of the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, and Eliud Owalo, Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, will join ID4Africa’s Executive Chairman for policy discussion centered around the topic “Accelerating Digital Transformation,” which will initiate the event’s first plenary session.
This year’s edition of the AGM will welcome a significant number of delegates from leading philanthropic organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Co-Develop, the Tony Blair Institute and OpenID Foundation.
It also attracts participation from the widest array of private sector actors, including the international and African identity, IT, and digital transformation industries, as well as the banking and FinTech sectors.
