NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 20 — Police in Kitengela Friday apprehended 20 boda boda riders accused of assault and malicious damage to property.
Police said the riders were part of a mob that stoned a motor vehicle involved in a hit-and-run incident along the Kitengela-Athi River Road.
The arrests were following a coordinated operation led by Kitengela OCS and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) personnel.
Twenty-six motorbikes linked to the suspects were impounded and held at the Kitengela Police Station pending the suspects’ arraignment.
“The above operation was conducted today 19th January 2024 by the OCS Kitengela, DCI Personnel and a team of officers, in response to an incident that occurred within Kitengela township on 18/1/2024 reported vide OB 98/18/01/2024,” read a police report obtained by Capital News on Saturday.
The January 18 incident transpired at around 7.30pm when the motor vehicle in question hit a motorcycle that was heading towards the same direction carrying a pillion passenger.
The 35-year-old passenger sustained injuries on the right leg, forehead and on the back of the head.
Police said the driver then sped off towards the Namanga general direction through the Arusha service lane hitting another pedestrian. The second victim sustained injuries on the knee while his four-year-old son reported chest injuries.
She then drove towards the Old Namanga Road and hit another motorcycle, injuring a pillion passenger, an expectant woman.
Continuing the erratic drive, she hit a pedestrian who sustained leg and shoulder injuries.
Rowdy boba boda riders blocked the motorist as she exited the Shell Petrol Station at Enkare.
During the confrontation, the co-driver was physically assaulted, resulting in injuries to the upper lip, two broken front upper teeth, and bruises on his forehead.
The driver is in police custody awaiting arraignment in court.
