NAIROBI, Kenya, June 17, 2026 – Frustrated by his team’s lethargy in front of goal, KCB FC head coach Robert Matano is set to overhaul his playing unit ahead of the new season.

Armed with a bulging wallet, the veteran tactician reveals he will be busy in the transfer market in search of high quality signings to boost the team’s fortunes.

“We will be fully immersed in the transfer market, looking for new players who are up to the standards required at KCB. Those that we have have tried their best and brought us this far but what we have seen is that they lack the quality to play for this team. We have learnt a lot of lessons and we are determined to find the right quality in the transfer market,” Matano said.

Brought in at the start of the season to transform KCB from also-rans to title contenders, Matano has endured a lukewarm stint thus far, in which the bankers have blown hot and cold.

Whereas a seventh place finish in the FKF Premier League is hardly disastrous, a well-funded team such as KCB have always been expected to contest for and clinch numerous silverware in their longstanding stay in the topflight.

Matano, who has won the FKF Premier League title with Sofapaka and Tusker FC, was always expected to be the final piece of the puzzle that the bankers needed to finally enter the exclusive club of Kenya’s most successful clubs, which includes Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards as well as the brewers.

However, on evidence of the 2025/26 season, there seems to be more work for the ‘Lion’ to do.

This much was on show in their last match, a FKF Cup third-place playoff against Bandari at the Kwale Stadium on Sunday, which they lost 2-0.

Predictably, Matano was blunt in his assessment of their performance, sharply criticising their offensive quality.

“Lack of quality in front of the goal…calmness…we have shot ourselves in the foot. We created a number of chances but we did not make the best use of them. That’s why we need the right quality of players to help us in this department,” he said.

With guaranteed support from his bosses at Ruaraka Club, Matano will be spoilt for choices as far as the signings required to make the bankers a portent threat in front of goal.

First season done and dusted, the ‘Lion’ will be roaring louder as he seeks to satisfy his hunger — and KCB’s — for the much coveted silverware.
