Feb 9, 2024 On Thursday night, all eyes turned to the two-hour interview between Tucker Carlson, the divisive, Trump-supporting right-wing commentator, and Vladimir Putin, the reclusive Russian autocrat. Filmed in Moscow, this marked Putin’s first interview with a Western media outlet since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The conversation, which was anticipated with both curiosity and skepticism, ultimately left many disappointed.

Carlson, known for his pugnacious style, adopted a notably deferential tone towards Putin, addressing him as “Mr. President” throughout the interview. Despite Carlson’s reputation for contentious interviews, his approach with Putin was notably less confrontational.

The decision to grant Carlson this exclusive interview drew widespread criticism beforehand, but the actual conversation failed to live up to expectations. Putin spent a significant portion of the interview delivering a historical monologue spanning centuries, before eventually addressing current geopolitical issues.

When the discussion finally turned to contemporary matters, Putin accused the US and Western countries of prolonging the conflict in Ukraine, alleging that peace talks were derailed by Western interference. He singled out Boris Johnson, the former British Prime Minister, for particular criticism, claiming that Johnson dissuaded Ukrainian President Zelenskiy from pursuing a peace deal in the conflict’s early stages.

Carlson did broach the subject of Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter detained in Russia on espionage charges, eliciting Putin’s assertion that Gershkovich was working for US special services. However, this claim contradicted the White House’s previous statements on the matter.

The interview, which aired on Carlson’s streaming service, Tucker Carlson Tonight, has reignited debates about press freedom, journalistic integrity, and the role of media in shaping public perception of global events. While Carlson positioned the interview as an effort to inform the American public about the situation in Ukraine, critics argue that his portrayal of Putin’s narrative serves to perpetuate misinformation.

Despite the controversy surrounding the interview, it underscores the challenges faced by independent media in both Russia and the West. With press freedoms under threat and journalists increasingly targeted for their work, the exchange between Carlson and Putin serves as a poignant reminder of the complex dynamics shaping the modern media landscape.
