NAIROBI, Kenya, July 26 – TotalEnergies and M-Gas have joined hands to enhance clean cooking accessibility in Kenya through a ‘Pay-as-You-Cook’ formula.

Through the partnership, M-Gas will contribute its ‘Pay-as-You-Cook’ smart meters to its 400,000 households, which will be installed on TotalEnergies’ supplied LPG cylinders.

The proprietary smart meter technology from M-Gas democratizes LPG access for consumers who cannot afford the upfront cost of purchasing gas.

This system allows customers to cook with as little as Sh10 via mobile money payments.

This, according to the partner, will go a long way in addressing the high cost of buying LPG upfront.

By switching from traditional cooking methods like charcoal to more affordable and less polluting LPG, the partners state, families will benefit from significant health advantages.

“Through this shared vision with M-Gas, we aim to have a positive impact in Kenya that will not only benefit the environment and people’s health but also reduce gender inequalities, especially time poverty for women,” said TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya Managing Director Eric Fanchini.

“The partnership aligns with the Government of Kenya’s vision of increasing LPG penetration and consumption per capita in the country.”

On his part, M-Gas Chief Executive Officer Martin Kimani asserted that the move is in line with M-Gas’ ambition of connecting the continent to cleaner and cheaper energy solutions.

“Leveraging our proprietary smart meter technology and elaborate last-mile infrastructure alongside Total Energies’ extensive supply network, this partnership will expand our reach to a previously underserved market, making clean cooking accessible to more families,” he said.
