NAIROBI, Kenya Mar 11 – The aftermath of President William Ruto’s tour of Ruaraka and Mathare on Tuesday has sparked criticism following reports of broad daylight muggings and robberies along the Thika Superhighway.
Videos and photos circulating online show groups of youths harassing motorists and commuters, snatching valuables from both personal and public service vehicles.
Witnesses in Mlango Kubwa and Survey reported incidents of vandalism, with youths breaking into vehicles and stealing mobile phones and other valuables from pedestrians.
President Ruto is currently on a five-day tour of Nairobi, inspecting and launching infrastructure projects aimed at improving the city and creating job opportunities for the youth.
On Monday, he toured Kamukunji and Madaraka, where he announced plans for a 60-kilometre sewer line project worth KSh 50 billion. He also pledged to increase jobs under the Climate Works Mtaani Initiative from 22,000 to 40,000 and oversee the construction of 50,000 affordable housing units in reclaimed areas.
