NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 25 — Second Lady Dorcas Rigathi has rooted for community-based rehabilitation program as an effective tool to tackle drug addiction in the country.
Pastor Dorcas was speaking at Kiandutu in Thika where she took her rehabilitation campaign on Friday.
“Community based rehabilitation has been proven to provide positive results world over.As a nation,Kenya and its development partners we cannot shy away from this line of argument towards community integrated process,” she said.
A similar initiative has been ongoing in Githunguri, Kiambu County where Pastor Dorcas said that the involvement of the community has been integral in the reform process for the young people.
Under the office of Pastor Dorcas more than 80 men are currently undergoing a 1-month rehabilitation camp at the Jamhuri ASK showground while another cohort of more than 50 are on their second week for a 3-months rehabilitation program in Limuru, Kiambu County.
The first cohort of the rehabilitation program will complete its program at a rehabilitation Centre in Timau, Meru County.
“When you see somebody staggering under the influence of alcohol let us not judge them,let us not call them names.We need to say it is time to call our children and change their lives,” Pastor Dorcas added.
NACADA Director Rev. Fredrick Ngugi said the community-based rehabilitation program has proven to be a better way towards a sober society.
Senior Assistant Chief John Gitau Karanja under whose leadership the Kiandutu community-based rehabilitation program is running termed community support as instrumental.
One of those helping in fighting the illicit brew in Kiandutu is mama Robi Akello aka Kadogo who after stopping selling chang’aa in the slum and turned to selling chapatis.
