NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 19 – Local carrier Safarilink has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that it had sharply increased airfares on the Nairobi–Kisumu route.
The airline termed the reports as “false and misleading,” following a post by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai on X claiming the fares had risen to $644 (Sh93,000) for a one-way ticket.
In screenshots shared online, Alai alleged that Safarilink had hiked prices amid high demand for flights to Kisumu as Kenyans travel to Bondo, Siaya County, for the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“We categorically refute the misleading and unsubstantiated allegations being circulated by Mr. Robert Alai and Mr. Cyprian Nyakundi. The screenshots shared, including those purportedly from our booking platform, do not accurately reflect the full range of fare classes available across multiple travel dates,” Safarilink said in a statement.
Safarilink clarified that its fares remain within the normal range of between Sh6, 500 and above, depending on demand and booking time.
“Safarilink operates a tiered fare system, with options ranging from Promo to Premium classes all of which are transparently displayed during the booking process,” he added.
“We wish to emphasize that at no point have such fares existed in our system. For clarity, our Kisumu–Nairobi fares typically start from Kes 6,500, as consistently shown across various dates in the coming months.”
