Dubai, UAE, Dec 5 – President William Ruto says Kenya is targeting to stop the use of fossil fuel and rely entirely on renewable energy use by 2030.
In an interview with CNN’s Becky Anderson, the head of state maintained that Africa has the potential to lead the world in transitioning to the use of renewable energy.
”We have slowed down any investments in fossil fuels in Kenya. We do not have any fossil fuel resources at the moment. All we have is fuel imported from everywhere else. But we are now starting a huge e-mobility program to make sure that we change all our transport that uses renewable energy. It is my commitment that by 2030 Kenya will be one hundred percent green,” he said.
President Ruto further seized the moment to call on the west to look for alternative sources of revenue through carbon taxes, adding that it is a firm option for generating finances to help mitigate climate change.
He added that Kenya is leading Africa in collaborating with the west in having targeted tax policies for key players in carbon emission such as the oil companies, marine as well as aviation sector.
”We will be launching a plan with the UAE, France and other coalition partners on a new charter for climate financing. That will take into account how to ensure oil companies cede part of their profit to sort oil the climate menace we are having,” he added.
