The African continent is reeling from the loss of John Okafor, affectionately known as Mr Ibu, a beloved figure in Nollywood who passed away at the age of 62.
Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, expressed profound sorrow as he confirmed the news, stating, “I announce with deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn’t make it.”
Reports indicate that Okafor breathed his last at an undisclosed hospital in Lagos state, succumbing to a cardiac arrest.
His journey to stardom began two decades ago with the iconic film “Mr Ibu,” a role that etched his name into the annals of Nigerian cinema. Renowned for his impeccable comedic timing, Okafor’s portrayal in “Mr Ibu” remains a highlight of his illustrious career.
Throughout his tenure in Nollywood, Okafor graced over 200 films, showcasing his versatility in productions like “Keziah,” “9 Wives,” and various sequels to “Mr Ibu.” His performances endeared him to audiences far and wide, solidifying his status as a cultural icon.
Tragically, Okafor’s health struggles came to public attention last year, culminating in the amputation of one of his legs in November. The procedure was made possible through the generosity of fans who contributed to a crowdfunding campaign for his medical expenses.
