Over 50 dead after truck ploughs into a  market in Londiani, Kericho

NAIROBI, Kenya June 30 – More than 50 people were killed late Friday after a truck ploughed into a market in Londiani, Kericho.

Witnesses said at least 55 bodies were taken out of the scene while several other people were rushed to hospital with varied injuries.

“So far, we have 45 bodies in the hospital mortuary and the rescue is still ongoing,” said Dr Collins Kipkoech who attended to victims at Kericho County Hospital.

Police who were involved in the rescue mission said 45 bodies were taken to Kericho county hospital mortuary while 10 others were taken to other nearby hospital mortuaries.

According to police, the accident occurred at about 6:30 pm when the truck lost control and ploughed into the busy market at Londiani junction.

Some of those killed or injured were in matatus and boda bodas that were parked on the roadside and in the market.

Most of the injured victims were rushed to Londiani and Kericho hospitals, police said.
