NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 3 — The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has arrested nine people selling Shisha in Quiver Eastlands and Habanos Lounge in Nairobi on Saturday night.
In a statement on Sunday, the Authority said the enforcement team that conducted a Shisha prohibition enforcement seized 18 Shisha bongs, assorted Shisha flavors, and Shisha preparation paraphernalia in Eastlands.
Additionally, authorities seized 60 Shisha bongs, confiscated 126 pieces of assorted flavors, and assorted paraphernalia used in Shisha preparation in Nairobi’s Habanos Lounge.
“Seven people were arrested, including the manager, sellers, and users in Habanos Lounge, and all the suspects arrested are detained in Jogoo Road Police Station waiting for their arraignment,” NACADA said.
The Authority said those arrested will appear before court and face charges for various offenses related to sections 3 and 4 of the Shisha rules.
The Public Health Act (Control of Shisha Smoking Rules, 2017) provides that: “No person shall import, manufacture, sell, offer for sale, use, advertise, promote or d distribute Shisha in Kenya.”
It also says: “No person shall allow, promote, facilitate, or encourage, or do anything to allow, promote, facilitate or encourage Shisha smoking in Kenya.”
Kenya implemented a comprehensive ban on Shisha in 2017 becoming the fourth country in East Africa to prohibit Shisha, after Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
