Mburia takes over as acting Co-operatives Commissioner

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 29 – Symon Mburia has taken over as Acting Commissioner for Co-operative Development following the retirement of David Obonyo.

Mburia, who previously served as Deputy Commissioner, brings more than 30 years of experience in co-operative administration, SACCO restructuring and community development.

His appointment comes as the government investigates the operations of Athipack Sacco Society Limited, following a Gazette notice dated October 23, 2026.

The notice, No. 16873, authorises Senior Co-operative Officer Susan W. Njoroge and Principal Co-operative Auditor Justine Kiprop Cheboi to investigate the SACCO’s by-laws, working and financial conditions, and the conduct of current and former management committee members and officers.

The officers have been directed to complete the inquiry within 14 days of the order. The investigation is being conducted under sections 58 and 73 of the Co-operative Societies Act.

Mburia joined the public service in 1993 as a co-operative officer in the then Tharaka Nithi District. He later served in Meru, Mwingi, Embu and Nairobi, where he gained experience in co-operative management and restructuring.

His previous assignments included restructuring the banking section of Meru South Union into a rural SACCO, reorganising Meru Union into separate entities and helping revive Embu Farmers SACCO, now known as Nawiri.

He has also served as acting chief executive of the Kenya Society of Professional Co-operators.

Mburia holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Science in Entrepreneurship from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and a certificate in Public Policy Development from Strathmore University.
