NAIROBI, Kenya Sep 11 – Laikipia residents have been urged to alert authorities early about areas at risk of flooding as the government steps up preparations for the anticipated El Niño rains.
Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli said residents should promptly report vulnerable areas requiring urgent intervention, including blocked or inadequate drainage systems.
Muli said early identification and reporting of potential flood hotspots would enable authorities to take preventive measures and minimise the risk of loss of lives and destruction of property.
The anticipated El Niño rains are expected to begin in October and continue through February next year, prompting authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness measures across the county.
The government has activated disaster management and response mechanisms, including mapping areas considered vulnerable to flooding, as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of the expected heavy rains.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and maintain close communication with local authorities, particularly by reporting emerging risks before the rains intensify.
Authorities say early intervention, including addressing drainage challenges and identifying vulnerable settlements, will be critical in reducing the impact of flooding during the rainy season.
