This June, Spotify’s EQUAL Africa programme celebrates Njerae, a rising Kenyan artist whose voice blends vulnerability with quiet strength.
Known for her soulful, refreshing sound, Njerae’s music is more than melody—it’s therapy, expression, and healing.
Her journey into music began in silence. A deeply introverted child, she first turned to poetry to process grief and confusion after a national tragedy. That outlet evolved into songwriting when she picked up the guitar, allowing her to voice what she couldn’t say aloud.
“My music started as something private,” she shares. “It became the only way I could express things I didn’t know how to speak.”
Influenced by African greats like Sauti Sol and Phy—who inspired her to join Sauti Academy—Njerae is forging her own path with grace and grit. “This is a huge opportunity for me,” she says of her EQUAL Africa recognition. “I’m so excited to be part of a platform that empowers women and puts us on top. It’s an honor.”
Navigating a male-dominated industry hasn’t dimmed her light. “I don’t let being a woman interfere with my journey. I’ll keep pushing for what I want—head held high.”
