NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 10 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the nationwide resumption of continuous voter registration and regular revision of the voters’ roll, effective Monday, January 12, 2026.
The directive, issued through Gazette Notice by IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon, lifts a temporary suspension that had been put in place to allow the conduct of by-elections held on November 27, 2025.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Articles 38 (3) (a), 83 and 88 (4) (a) and (b) of the Constitution of Kenya… the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission gives notice that continuous voter registration and the regular revision of the voters’ roll shall resume on Monday, 12th January, 2026,”the notice read.
In the notice, the commission invited eligible Kenyan citizens who have attained the age of 18 and possess a valid national identity card or Kenyan passport to present themselves at their respective constituency offices to register or update their voter details.
Services available during the exercise include new voter registration, transfer of voter registration from one electoral area to another, correction or updating of voter particulars, and inspection of the voters’ roll to confirm accuracy.
According to the commission, constituency offices will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
The resumption applies to a wide range of constituencies spread across several counties. These include Magarini in Kilifi; Galole and Garsen in Tana River; and Lamu West in Lamu County.
In North Eastern Kenya, registration will resume in Wajir West, Eldas and Tarbaj in Wajir County, as well as Banissa in Mandera. The exercise will also cover Laisamis in Marsabit, and Isiolo North and Isiolo South in Isiolo County.
In the Upper Eastern region, the affected constituencies include Imenti Central in Meru, Maara in Tharaka-Nithi, and Chuka/Igambang’ombe. In Eastern Kenya, Mbeere South in Embu and Machakos Town in Machakos County will also participate.
The exercise will further cover Turkana North, Turkana West and Turkana South in Turkana County, alongside Samburu North in Samburu. In the Rift Valley, Moiben in Uasin Gishu, Keiyo South in Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Chesumei in Nandi have been listed.
Baringo County has the highest number of participating constituencies, including Tiaty, Baringo North, Baringo Central, Baringo South, Mogotio and Eldama Ravine. Narok North in Narok County and Kajiado Central in Kajiado County are also included.
In Western Kenya, the exercise will take place in Khwisero in Kakamega and Kabuchai in Bungoma. Parts of Nyanza will also participate, including Ugunja in Siaya, Kasipul in Homa Bay, and West Mugirango, North Mugirango and Borabu in Nyamira County. In Nairobi, the exercise will cover Embakasi North constituency.
However, voter registration remains suspended in Mbeere North and Malava constituencies due to ongoing election petitions. In these areas, the commission is instead focusing on preparations for party primaries, including the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominations scheduled for January 10, 2026, for various Member of County Assembly positions.
“….that that continuous voter registration and revision of the voters’ roll “shall not be conducted in Mbeere North Constituency and Malava Constituency where there are pending election petitions,”the notice read.
The IEBC said the resumption of continuous voter registration is a critical step in maintaining an accurate and credible voters’ roll, while also ensuring that newly eligible voters and those seeking to update their records are not locked out of the electoral process ahead of future elections.
The commission has urged eligible citizens to take advantage of the exercise and verify their registration details early to avoid last-minute congestion when election timelines draw closer.
