NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 21 — Detectives in Nairobi are holding a General Service Unit (GSU) officer in connection with the death of a 28-year-old woman who reportedly jumped from the balcony of her rented house in Lang’ata on January 11.
Initial reports indicated that the deceased had leaped from the third floor of her apartment, leading to her death.
The apartment’s caretaker informed detectives that the woman, who lived alone, jumped at approximately 05.50am, drawing the attention of neighbours who heard a thud.
“Preliminary examination by Crime Scene personnel from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) showed no physical injuries on the body,” a police report circulated on Saturday indicated.
Detectives however observed blood oozing from the victim’s nose.
Police shifted their focus from a probable suicide after subsequent investigations implicated the GSU officer, believed to be the last person seen with the deceased.
DCI narrowed down on the suspect after discovering several items in the victim’s residence.
“Some the items recovered included a used condom, an empty 750-milliliter Viceroy whiskey bottle, a quarter-filled 2-liter Coca-Cola bottle, two glasses, and a partially smoked roll of bhang,” DCI reported.
A mobile phone analysis revealed that Victor Ouma had been in constant communication with the victim.
Further scrutiny revealed that Ouma joined the victim at her apartment on the night of her demise after purchasing alcoholic drinks worth Sh1,650 and an unidentified item valued at Sh150 at 7:27pm.
Ongoing investigations will seek to uncover the events that transpired between the nights of January 10 and 11, leading to the woman’s death.
This incident comes amid increasing cases of crimes of passion in the country with three women killed in Nairobi alone since the beginning of the year.
