NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 24 – The Ministry of Education has announced the release of Sh18.51 billion in capitation to support the operations of public basic education institutions during the third term of 2026.
The announcement was made by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba as schools reopened across the country on Monday.
Primary schools were allocated Sh1.40 billion, Junior Schools Sh6.14 billion and Secondary Schools Sh10.96 billion.
“The release is intended to facilitate the smooth running of schools and the implementation of learning activities during the new term,” Ogambas stated.
Ogamba reminded school heads and principals that the funds are public resources that must be used prudently for the benefit of learners.
He also warned schools against imposing unauthorised levies, saying the Ministry would take action against institutions found misappropriating capitation funds or charging illegal fees.
The Government said the disbursement is part of its constitutional obligation to provide free and compulsory basic education, as provided for under Article 53(1)(b) of the Constitution.
“School heads and principals are directed to ensure prudent use of these public resources entrusted to their care for the benefit of learners, and to desist from imposing any unauthorised levies,” Ogamba said.
He further pledged to deal firmly with verified cases of misuse of capitation funds as learners begin the final term of the 2026 academic year.
