Five Tips To Make Your Hotel Room Feel Like Home

Traveling can be an exciting and enlightening experience and there is joy and excitement when checking-in to a hotel. However, we can create our environment to offer the best of both worlds by making a hotel room feel a bit like home rather than a foreign space.

Sometimes living out of a suitcase far too long can wear you down and leave you feeling a little bit homesick even when you’re staying in an elegant suite with all the amenities you could ask for.

If you’re a business trip flyer constantly on the road or just love globe-trotting on holidays, here are some tips and tricks to turn your hotel room into a personalized mini haven to keep homesickness at bay.

Bring your favorite candle or humidifier

Most hotel rooms typically smell of soap or bleach/antiseptic- clean but not necessarily comforting. Pack a travel sized scented candle to fill your hotel room with an aroma that says home to you. Plain old tea-light candles with a few drops of essential oils will do the trick. Just make sure you check with the hotel front desk before lighting it. If you’re not allowed to light a candle or incense in your hotel room, swap those out with a portable mini humidifier/ diffuser and load it up with lavender or lemon oils to create a sensory environment that smells just like home. Also try packing a laundry scent spray to spray your pillows- trust us, it’ll be worth the space it takes up in your suitcase.

Bring your favorite form of entertainment

Bring along your Ipad, laptop or a small electronic devices pre-loaded with a few episode of your favorite shows off your streaming platform of choice. You can also bring a portable Bluetooth speaker to fill your room with your favorite soothing playlist. Simplify your life by picking up a power strip to utilize any available outlet in your room.

Bring your favorite beverage

You’re going to come back to this room tired and probably hungry from a long day of sightseeing or working during a business trip and nothing sounds better than relaxing with your favorite nightcap and snacks. Bring along a few mini bottles to make a delicious cocktails or mocktails . If you are one of those people who can’t live without your cup of tea or coffee, pack your favorite teas to start the morning with your preferred unique flavor and avoid all the caffeine headaches.

Hang up your clothes right away

Something about the idea of ‘living out of a suitcase’ doesn’t evoke home comfort vibes- it’s cumbersome to keep tidy and things are hard to find. Unpacking your suitcase after you arrive, placing your clothes on a hanger in the closet helps you feel normal and makes your things more accessible. Plus, keeping your clothes in a suitcase long term will make them completely wrinkled.

Same goes for the toiletries

Hotel toiletries are only great for one night, but nothing reminds you that you’re staying in a hotel faster than going to take a shower and only having a tiny body wash at your disposal for days on end. It’s always better to pack your own favorite travel size version of your own go to products. Your toiletries list should include things like toothpaste, lotion, face and body shower gels/soap and deodorant as a bare minimum. Don’t leave your toiletries lingering in your luggage either. Set them up in their proper place.
