NAIROBI, Kenya, June 24 – Experts are calling for responsible artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, coming at a time when the adoption of AI is gaining pace in Kenya and globally.
James Njogu, acting Secretary General and CEO of the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO, emphasized the importance of embracing AI responsibly.
“Kenya is leading in the development and ethical use of AI tools across various sectors, including education, research, natural sciences, culture, and communication,” Njogu said.
He highlighted AI’s transformative potential in health, education, and leadership while acknowledging the need to address challenges.
“This forum aims to discuss both the benefits and challenges of AI, particularly concerning data acquisition, management, and privacy issues,” he added, underscoring the importance of balancing innovation with ethical considerations.
Njogu spoke during the inaugural Eastern Africa Sub-regional Forum on Artificial Intelligence that began in Nairobi today.
The forum, which brings together policymakers, tech industry leaders, and international experts, aims to address the unique opportunities and challenges presented by AI technologies in East Africa, highlighting the region’s specific needs and potential in AI development and governance.
The three-day event will conclude on Wednesday night with the adoption of the Nairobi Declaration on AI in Eastern Africa.
“The world is now discussing how we can positively govern Artificial intelligence. With its recommendation on the ethics of AI, UNESCO is helping to shape that debate, and therefore, the African voices need to be very strong,” UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences Gabriela Ramos said.
She highlighted that Kenya has the leadership and drive to position itself as an exciting destination for investment in AI.
